History
The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient breed, which has been used throughout history for its strong hunting skills. Originally, this breed was used by Phoenician traders in 600 BC. This breed reached Portugal around 700 BC, and in the country, various different sizes of the breed were developed. The Podengo Grande was used primarily for hunting larger prey, like wild boar.
Characteristics
The Portuguese Podengo can be separated into three different sizes, which are Pequeno, which is the smallest, Medio, which is medium sized and Grande, which is the largest. The Podengo Pequeno ranges from 8 to 12 inches in height, and weighs around 9 to 13 pounds. The Podengo Medio measures between 15 to 22 inches in height and weighs between 35 to 44 pounds. The Podengo Grande ranges from 22 to 27 inches in height and weighs between 44 to 66 pounds.
This breed does not have many common health issues or problems, making it a very healthy breed overall. On average, the Podengo Português has a lifespan of 12 to 14 years.
This breed features a muscular physique, and a flat, pyramid shaped head. The breed comes in two different varieties, which are smooth and wirehaired. It is also available in a wide range of different colours, like yellow, black and fawn. This breed was originally a hunting dog so it possesses a keen sense of smell and sight.
